The PS Vita is available in two different models…

  • Wi-Fi
  • Wi-Fi and 3G

While both offer wireless networking connectivity, the upgraded model offers 3G access. This means you can enjoy high-speed web browsing, multiplayer gaming and video streaming anywhere that 3G coverage is available. However, this benefit comes at a price. When deciding between the two models, there are a few things that you should consider.

Additional Costs and Monthly Fees

The PS Vita 3G costs $50 more than the standard PS Vita. To use the 3G adapter included in the PS Vita 3G, you must have a data plan through AT&T. Plans start at $15 for 250 megabytes over a 30-day period. The largest offering is two gigabytes of data over a 30-day period for $25. A lack of unlimited data means you will have to be mindful of your 3G usage throughout the month if you expect to avoid additional charges.

Fortunately, these packages are available without having to sign a contract. This allows you to enable or disable your 3G data plan on a month-to-month basis to account for your needs. However, unused data does not carry over from one month to the next. If you purchase a two-gigabyte data plan and only use 100 megabytes of data by the end of the billing cycle, it expires. More data must then be purchased before 3G access is restored.

Benefits of 3G Access

Without an active 3G connection, you can only use the online features of the PS Vita where an active wireless Internet connection is available. Unless you live in an area with numerous Wi-Fi hotspots or citywide Wi-Fi, this means your options for mobile use are extremely limited. By purchasing the PS Vita 3G, you can enjoy the online features of the PS Vita, anywhere you have 3G coverage. With 3G coverage on the AT&T network expanding rapidly, this benefit will only get better with time.

Transfer Limits

While you can use the 3G connection anywhere you get a signal, there are one major limitation to its use. AT&T has placed a 20-megabyte file size cap on all 3G file transfers. This means that you will not be downloading PS Vita or PSP games over your 3G connection unless the policy is changed.
